Since Google’s UX improvements to the same old satellite view that’s been around for a while, “place” has been popping up everywhere. Meetro adds location-specific enhancements and sharing to IM. Plazes broadcasts presence and lets people “annotate” a place. And now that we’ve decided tags are good enough for marking up the old internet, it seems it’s time to tag the real world… or at least NYC using FoundCity.

And don’t forget Searchscapes (see previous post)... and the Google Maps + Craigslist mashup at housingmaps.com.

From Searchscapes:
Each person constructs his/her image of the city. This image is made out of facts, memories, experiences, stories, news - mostly invisible data, and not only of architecture, buildings and streets.
"SEARCHSCAPES: MANHATTAN" is an attempt to create a tridimensional map of Manhattan, using existing data from the web.
The objective is to compare the city's "physical spaces" and "information spaces" (search results). This is an attempt to materialize information: to give it dimension and physicality.

‘Lotus 23’ is a fully retractable umbrella, folding into a low profile handle. Built with flexible ribs that flow with the wind, it is more durable than conventional designs allowing it to withstand severe storms, provide increased shade and self clean. More at gizmag…

Well-intentioned design is notorious for solving the wrong problem (e.g. pre-fab plastic housing units for people whose real need is access to clean water), but a few Royal College of Art students may have come up with something useful. They designed an inflatable concrete shelter that packs for portability but turns into a sturdy temporary building with the addition of water. More at Wired…

On a quick check to see if there was anything new on PrayStation, I ran across some of the old archives. I always loved Josh’s experiments, and it’s great that he’s kept them around.
