TiVoToGo Finally Competes with Media Center
With their first new feature announcement in quite a while, TiVo releases info on TiVoToGo. It requires the $99 Home Media Option and a bundle of software for your PC (no word on the Mac yet), but users will be able to watch recorded programs and back them up on DVDs. It won't be available until Fall of 2004 and the price of the additional software bundle hasn't been announced.
While this comes as exciting news to TiVo owners, Windows Media Center 2004 offers this feature as well. And with Media Center PCs starting to show up under $1000 and with no subscription fees, TiVo is going to need to pick up the pace on features or else risk having educated an entire population on the joys of a TiVo-like experience only to lose them to competitors. 1/4/05 Update:
TiVo is finally releasing "TiVoToGo Transfers" and the good news is that it doesn't require the awful security dongle. Also of note, since this posting TiVo no longer charges for the Home Media Option, and Microsoft continues to lead in features and interoperability (if not in pricing) with the Portable Media Center addition to the Media Center product line. I think this is really going to be a great add on to the TiVo. The great thing about TiVo is that they are constantly looking for ways to change how we watch TV.
Keep up the great work TiVo!
